You
get used to seeing certain things and never question them. A sunrise, a rainbow, or in our case, snow,
snow, and more snow. As I drove home in
yet another storm this evening, I was laser focused on the snow ruts left by
the last car to show me the way home. Never
did I expect to see a car on the other side of the highway DRIVING THE WRONG
WAY!
I
didn’t believe what I was seeing. It was
almost like I had to explain it in my head or rationalize it in some way. So when that didn’t work, I pulled out my
cell phone and dialed 911. I’m happy to
say I kept my calm and was able to clearly articulate what was happening, what
exit we were near, etc. But I was
shaking inside.
Personally,
I was never in danger, however I was terrified that I was going to witness a
horrific head on collision. I never saw
it (thankfully) but a quick glance in my rear view mirror gave me confidence
that some divine intervention in the form of a convoy of plows had taken place. I believe that those plows may have saved
lives more than my 911 call; by not only being big and bright and taking up
much of the highway, but also because the convoy of plows had backed up all of
the traffic that was heading towards the wrong way driver.
I’ll
never understand, even in the worst of weather conditions, how you don’t realize
you’re driving the wrong way on a highway.
Whether impaired, medically distressed, or just confused somehow, I
think this wrong way driver dodged a bullet.
And all the cars in its path.
Phew.
I had some drinks in Boston one time and drove home to Malden. I thought I was fine and turned onto that major route that goes through Somerville. All of a sudden I see headlights coming at me. I have a conversation on my head about that then I realize I'm on the wrong side of that major route going the wrong way! I got to the other side via the police median and was fine. Never drank and drove again. Never. Not once. It could have been all over in one instant.
ReplyDeleteWow Michelle, that's some way to get a lesson served to you! How scary.
DeleteOMG, that must have been so surreal! I'm glad you're home, safe and sound!
ReplyDeleteILU ~ Mama
It sure was. I'm just so glad I didn't have to witness a crash. Not sure how I'd erase that memory :(

ReplyDeleteThat would have caught me by surprise too. Good job calling 911. :)
ReplyDeleteI actually had a mini panic moment, like "What do I do?" but quickly regained my senses. I think those plows were a godsend!
DeleteThat is scary - you always wonder if something happened to the driver or if they are just not paying attention! Glad you made it home safely - BOO to more snow!
ReplyDeleteI remember when my father in law was approaching that time when we were probably going to have to yank his driver's license. We never had to fortunately, but I always wonder about elderly drivers (and I love the elderly, so not a dig!). Hopefully, all was OK once out of my rear view mirror....

Whoa! That's nuts! I totally know what you mean... I saw a guy driving on the wrong side of the median in front of my house the other day. The wrong way up a one direction two lane road in broad daylight! No snow, no storms. Yikes! It takes a second to compute! Glad you weren't in any danger!
